Delidding a Ryzen 7 8700G APU allows it to run up to 25 degrees cooler-
It’s been a week since the official launch of AMD’s Ryzen 8000 series of APUs, and overclockers have had a week to tinker with the chips. It turns out the Ryzen 7 8700G has some decent overclocking headroom, particularly if you delid it, which will lower temperatures and allow it to be overclocked to Ryzen 7 7700X performance levels—or beyond.
The test was run by Der8auer. He began by explaining why the Ryzen 8000-series chips don’t feature soldered thermal interface material (TIM), saying it’s because they are more closely related to mobile parts rather than higher TDP desktop parts. That makes sense given their 65W TDP. I’d add that it allows AMD to save a few cents. Given that a stock 8700G will run in the 80 to 90 degree range depending on your cooling capabilities…
Hogwarts Legacy dev tries to cool the community’s excitement about the summer update, says it’s just a ‘small way of us showing appreciation’-
Hogwarts Legacy is by certain metrics the most successful game of 2023, with a Warner Bros. exec purring at the start of the year that the Harry Potter RPG was the “best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide.” That commercial success, with over 22 million sales and counting, has brought renewed focus on whether the game will eventually receive an expansion or any significant DLC (beyond some formerly PlayStation-exclusive trinkets crossing over).
Earlier this year the game’s developer, WB Avalanche, said that new things would indeed be coming this summer, which had wizards and witches rushing to their Divination equipment. There are several features oft-requested by the community that seem like a good shout for inclusion: a photo mode, for …
Oops, Windows 11 upgrades were offered to ineligible PCs-
Last week, Microsoft offered an upgrade to Windows 11 for previously unsupported Windows 10 PCs. As it turns out, Microsoft didn’t lower the minimum requirements for Windows 11 for older Windows 10 PCs; it was a weird (now fixed) glitch.
According to a blog post, “Some hardware ineligible Windows 10 and Windows 11, version 21H2 devices were offered an inaccurate upgrade to Windows 11.” Anyone who tried installing Windows 11 on machines that did not meet the minimum requirements could not “complete the upgrade installation process.”
Even if you did install Windows 11 on a device Microsoft deems eligible, it’s not recommended because of compatibility issues. Those same machines will not be able to receive updates which could put you and your PC at risk. There have also b…

The Mass Effect board game is basically a new sidequest for a 12 year old RPG, but it’s sadly lacking in BioWare magic
Despite being based on one of the most iconic RPG series of all time, there’s something oddly dry about the upcoming board game Mass Effect: Priority Hagalaz. Set during the events of Mass Effect 3, the premise is basically a sidequest that never was—taking place over the course of a single night as Shepard and crew board and fight their way through a crashed Cerberus ship to recover research data.
Even for those who can still remember the specific story details of a game that came out 12 years ago, the stakes here feel low. Why does this pretty minor mission matter, when we already know how the wider story plays out? It’s a serviceable excuse for a series of linked combat missions, but there’s no drama to it or any hook to pull you in. And from what I’ve played so far of …
Starfield’s been left out to dry at The Game Awards—and even dedicated fans are ‘not terribly surprised’-
Starfield was primed to go galactic in the steady countdown to its launch. It was the first big mainline Bethesda RPG in a while. It was big and ambitious—one small step for Bethesda as a studio, one giant leap for gamer kind.
Post launch, though, and that hype’s cooled significantly. What we got was more Bethesda standing in place, while gamer kind just… shuffled around in a circle, wondering how the studio still hadn’t put together a good inventory system, again.
That’s not to say Starfield’s a bad game, or anything. It’s one of the more stable Bethesda launches by far. I enjoyed my couple dozen hours with it, and our own Christopher Livingston gave it a 74 in his Starfield review—meaning it’s a game we actively like.
Still, it’s been l…
BioWare’s Star Wars- The Old Republic team will suffer layoffs as the developer recommits to singleplayer games-
After the disaster that was Anthem, it should be good news that BioWare is recommitting to singleplayer games, but as the company bids farewell to Star Wars: The Old Republic and confirms layoffs, it’s more bittersweet.
BioWare general manager Gary McKay confirmed that Broadsword Online Games would be taking over SWTOR to allow BioWare to focus on Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Broadsword is a veteran MMO studio with experience at taking over MMOs and was founded by Rob Denton, a former BioWare VP who was involved in SWTOR’s development. It was previously suggested that the current team would be joining the third-party studio, and while this is still the case, unfortunately not all jobs are being saved.
“No big change comes without challenges,” wrote McKay. “Among t…
Walton Goggins reveals that parts of the Fallout show were filmed at a diamond mine where ‘there’s still diamonds on the ground’-
Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul on the Fallout TV show, who over the course of the series becomes a memorable and conflicted link between the world as-was and as it is in the present day. It’s a fantastic performance, which will be no surprise to those who’ve followed Goggins’ career, and while basking in the aftermath of the show’s success the actor revealed a surprising detail about one of the locations.
Some of the outdoor scenes in Fallout were filmed in Namibia, on what is sometimes referred to as the Skeleton Coast, including in an actual diamond mine (thanks, GamesRadar+). A new photograph released by Amazon shows The Ghoul at this location, looking downcast and moody as is his wont, but Goggins says the real explanation is a little more base.

Wait, again- War Thunder fans just can’t help themselves when it comes to posting sensitive military documents-
As reported by Aerotime, on January 18 user RanchSauce39 on the War Thunder forums shared scans of an operations manual for the F-15 Eagle fighter jet, data that is potentially against US law to disseminate, in the course of a long forum thread about the history of the vehicle and its performance in the long-running military simulator.
This incident is not to be confused with that time in July 2021 when a War Thunder player posted classified documents related to the British Challenger 2 tank to the forums, the brisk morning in October 2021 when a War Thunder forum goer shared classified documents related to the French Leclerc Serie 2 main battle tank, that astounding day last June when a wayward child of God dropped classified deets on the Chinese DTC 10-125 125mm anti-tank …

Wow, that was close. I gave my Wordle a classic “skyscraper” look for much of today’s game, tall green towers surrounded by increasingly panicked grey guesses. A little pause to break my losing train of thought was a big help today, just the change I needed to look at the puzzle with fresh eyes—and find the answer.

Use towers, traps, and guns to repel spaceship boarders in tower defense-shooter hybrid Sentry-
An indie tower defense/shooter hybrid that hit Steam Early Access late last month is getting pretty positive reviews from early players. In Sentry your job is to defend a ship of frozen human survivors fleeing alien attack by setting up a gauntlet of traps, tricks, and environmental hazards between enemy boarders and the energy core of your ship.
Sentry’s also an first-person shooter hybrid, letting you use a variety of guns to blow out enemy weak points, or convenient windows, to defeat the oncoming horde. It’s just singleplayer for now, but Sentry plans to add two player co-op in the future.
You might remember Sentry from its trailer a couple years back.
Individual levels aside, Sentry is set up on a node-based map like a lot of popular roguelikes. As your ship moves…

We thought AMD’s RX 7000-series was complete, but now the RX 7600 XT has broken cover-
With the release of the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, we speculated that the RDNA 3 product stack was complete. In fact there are still some gaps, notably at the low end where it’s possible we’ll see something like an RX 7500 or RX 7400. But there’s another position that could be filled, above the $269 RX 7600 and below the $449 RX 7700 XT. Enter the RX 7600 XT.
Twitter sleuth @harukaze5719 spotted an entry on the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) website, as they did about two months before the launch of the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT.
The cards in question are listed by TUL corporation, the makers of Powercolor cards. The two variants are the RX 7600 XT 12G and RX 7600 XT 10G. Interestingly, the listings reveal RX 6750 Golden Rabbit Editions, which are sure t…
